March Art Night at Kentuck

Location: Kentuck Art Center
Start Date: Thu March 4th 2010 End Date: Thu March 4th 2010
Start Time: 5:00 PM End Time: 9:00 PM
Event Description:
Kentuck Art Center
503 Main Avenue
Northport, AL 35476
Thursday, March 4, 2010, 5 – 9pm

Kentuck Gallery presents recent work by Birmingham artist Julia Peerson Carpenter. The opening reception will take place on Art Night March 4, 2010 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. The exhibit will be on display until March 27, 2010.
Julia Peerson Carpenter started building metal dresses while attending the University of Montevallo. In 2000 she developed a project called Metalwear which consists of life-size dresses fabricated from scrap steel. Her works, which vary in pattern, style, and color, started as abstracted self portraiture. Over time, her focus has shifted more towards the design of the dresses. But their purpose still stands to illustrate the balance of strength and elegance that Carpenter finds to be so important in people and in art.
Carpenter had the idea to create jewelry from the Metalwear project because she could not bear to throw out her burned and beaten scraps. She feels that every tiny piece of metal deserves scrutiny… and that every tiny piece of scrutinized metal needs to be worn.
Art Night is the first Thursday of each month and celebrates the opening of all exhibits in downtown Northport galleries. Kentuck studio artists will host their monthly Open Studios for visitors to see works in progress, meet the artists, and see the actual workspaces where the artists apply materials, design, technique and equipment to the creative process.
In addition to the opening reception, the Kentuck Courtyard will feature music by the Vogt Family Contra Band and a Kentuck for Kids activity. Art Night participants will enjoy fresh made bread and pizzas from the cob oven.
Art Night is funded in part by a grant from The Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa.
