Art Night at Kentuck

Location: Kentuck Art Center
Start Date: Thu April 1st 2010 End Date: Thu April 1st 2010
Start Time: 5:00 PM End Time: 9:00 PM
Event Description:
Kentuck Art Center
503 Main Avenue
Northport, AL 35476
Thursday, April 1, 2010, 5 – 9pm

Kentuck Gallery presents recent work by fiber artist David Betak. The opening reception will take place on Art Night April 1, 2010 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. The exhibit will be on display until April 30, 2010.
David Betak graduated from The University of Alabama with a BFA in printmaking. He next studied textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology at State University in New York City where he founded the “dwb surface design studio.” His textiles are sold and showcased at the Maralyn Wilson Gallery and Kentuck Gallery Shop.
“I think of my textiles more as ‘wearable art.’ When dealing with textiles I recognize their practical functions but also think of them as a way to bring my personal expression into their creation. My inspirations have largely come from the work of twentieth century artists Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and the more contemporary, Elizabeth Murray.”
Art Night is the first Thursday of each month and celebrates the opening of all exhibits in downtown Northport galleries. Kentuck studio artists will host their monthly Open Studios for visitors to see works in progress, meet the artists, and see the actual workspaces where the artists apply materials, design, technique and equipment to the creative process.
In addition to the opening reception, the Kentuck Courtyard will feature music by Holly Puckett. Art Night participants will enjoy fresh made bread and pizzas from the cob oven. Kentuck encourages participants to bring an item(s) to donate to the newest Kentuck mosaic.
Also on April Art Night, the Kentuck Annex will feature The University of Alabama’s Women’s Resource Center “Healing the Wounded Heart” exhibit opening.
The Sexual Assault Awareness Month Coordinator at the Women’s Resource Center, Maria-Victoria Perez-Fisher says, “Creating a piece of art is a great way to work at healing a wounded heart. Not only does it help with the healing process, but it also provides strength and empowerment for others affected by violence.” The “Healing the Wounded Heart” art exhibit gives visual testimony to the impact of violence in one’s life. Through the “Wounded Hearts” program, survivors and those who work with survivors have an opportunity to use art as a therapeutic device to express the influence of violence and the strength gained through healing.
The Women’s Resource Center provides outreach, services and advocacy to empower women and encourage their active and equal participation in The University of Alabama and community. For more information, visit the Women’s Resource Center web site at wrc.ua.edu.
Art Night is funded in part by a grant from The Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa.
