Event Description:
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Gorgas Library on The University of Alabama campus will play host to the Miniature Book Society's national traveling exhibit from Wednesday, Feb. 15, to Sunday, April 15. The exhibit is sponsored by University Libraries and the Alabama Center for the Book. For centuries, individuals have been collecting miniature books. To promote knowledge of these tiny treasures, the Miniature Book Society has created a national traveling exhibit showcasing modern masterpieces as well as historic examples. The traveling exhibit also includes books from the Miniature Book Society's annual competition. Two University of Alabama students from the School of Library and Information Studies Book Arts Program entered the 2011 competition. Their books will be featured in the collection. Mary Elizabeth Watson's book "Cat Talk" measures 3 inches by 2 5/8 inches. It features images hand drawn and printed from photographic plates. Timothy Winkler's book "Jumble" is 3 inches by 3 inches. It is a letterpress book printed with polymer plates and linocuts. The design is meant to represent a chaotic "mess" of ideas. Winkler is both author and illustrator. To accompany the exhibit, four additional display cases will feature 22 miniature books from W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library's Book Arts Collection and information about the art of collecting miniature books. In the United States, a miniature book is usually considered to be one which is no more than 3 inches in height, width or thickness. Earlier this year, a miniature book from 1749, "T Oranje Geslagt," was priced at $20,000 on a bookseller's website. The exhibit is free and open to the public. It can be viewed during regular library hours: 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday-Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 2 a.m. Sunday. For holiday closings and exceptions, go to http://www.lib.ua.edu/spring2012 or call 205/348-1416.

Event Description:
In traditional Japanese thought, the time of ohanami, or viewing of the cherry blossoms, reminds one of the paradoxically fleeting yet enduring nature of life, which is symbolized in the single moment when a cherry blossom petal detaches itself to float earthward. In contemporary Japan, friends joyfully gather whenever the cherry trees, called sakura, blossom. Ohanami is delightful on the UA campus at the corner of University Boulevard and Stadium Drive. Takemine Mochizuki of Narashino City donated the cherry trees at Shelton State Community College, as well as those in Narashino Grove of Lurleen Wallace Boulevard. You can also view the lovely cherry blossoms at JVC America, Inc., the UA Arboretum, and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. There are a number of exciting events that make up the Sakura Festival. Check our website or the attached image for a full listing.

Stephen Watson MA Exhibition March 1-22 at the Harrison Galleries, 2315 Univ. Blvd., Tuscaloosa Opening Reception: March 1, 6-9 p.m. Gallery hours: Monday-Friday 12-5 p.m., or by appointment: (205) 310-1648 About his work, Stephen Watson writes: "My shape is a curved taper-and-swell. The name of the shape is a description –the shape is curved, tapers at the ends, and swells in the middle. While it is similar to a crescent moon, a banana, a boat, or a smile, the shape is none of these things. It is a curved, tapering, swelling shape that is reminiscent of much but is specifically very little. Each permutation of a curved taper-and-swell varies visually. At times, the shape is clearly defined; at other times, it is completely concealed. My shape is more like a material than an idea. Rather than carrying meaning, the shape is a medium as essential to my work as paint or wood. It serves as a vehicle, general guideline, or excuse to explore other materials and concepts." TAKE THE ART RIDE free, downtown on March 1, 5:45 - 8:30 p.m. to the Harrison Galleries, Paul Jones Art Gallery, Kentuck Gallery and return to the Sarah Moody Gallery! The Art Ride is sponsored by the Blount Undergraduate Initiative, the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art, New College and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Saturday, March 31 is a public expo day where potters display their works and demonstrate the art of pottery making. Outdoor firings, hands-on activities and artifact identification are additional offerings during the public day., Also part of the project, companion exhibits are presented at two different locations. The second focal point is Southeastern Indian iconography, the study of the meaning of traditional symbols used on Southeastern Native American artwork. Since prehistoric times, pottery has been one of the major art forms to incorporate images which represent aspects of Southeastern Indian world beliefs. Participants will discuss the meanings of these symbols during lectures and panel discussions., Registration is required and fees are charged for persons attending the entire gathering. Regular admission is charged to visitors attending the gathering’s Saturday expo at Moundville Archaeological Park. Event Description:
Ferdinard is on his way to his wedding, when a hungry horse eats a young lady's straw hat. To save the woman's reputation with her husband, Ferdinard must find an identical replacement, only to find his own financée and the entire wedding party following him in the search. The musical farce by Eugene Labiche and Mare-Michel, originally written in French, soon develops into a delirious chase, filled with mishaps, classical comic misunderstandings and a witty ending.

Sponsored By: Military Child Education Coalition Cost: FREE- Funded by Office of the Secretary of Defense Age Range: Adults Contact: Amanda Hulsey Description: I wanted to make you aware of an important (and free!) professional development training opportunity in support of the many military children in Tuscaloosa area schools. In fact, the Alabama Adjutant General's Family/Youth programs team specifically selected Tuscaloosa for this training based on the latest data on the numbers of military children in the area affected by deployments and redeployments., The Military Child Education Coalition's 'Living In the New Normal' (LINN) Institute will be conducted March 1-2 from 8am to 4pm both days. Breakfast and lunch meals will be provided at no cost both days. The training is accredited (for those seeking) for one graduate credit and certified by IACET and NBCC for CEUs. There is no cost to attend., The training will provide the latest research and experience-based information, knowledge and tools to help educators recognize and respond to the needs of military children with informed sensitivity and support. I have attached the 'Save The Dates'flyer for the training with instruction to register through the Military Child Education Coalition website: www.militarychild.org Click On Upcoming trainings and scroll down to the Tuscaloosa LINN (note: it may be listed on Page Two or Three of the list of scheduled trainings.
