Indian Hills Country Club to host Tennis Night in America

TUSCALOOSA | Indian Hills Country Club will host Tennis Night on Monday between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. for ages 6-18.
The first 50 kids receive a free Tennis Night cap. It will run in conjunction with Tennis Night in America that is aimed to promote tennis among children.

- WEST BLOCTON | West Blocton defeated Holt 9-6 in prep baseball action Wednesday, improving its record to 3-2. The loss drops Holt to 1-4.
Daniels Scarpelli got the win for West Blocton. He pitched three innings and struck out four. He also had five walks, gave up four hits and hit one batter.

- TUSCALOOSA | The Stillman College baseball team fell behind early but battled back to defeat the University of West Alabama 10-9 Wednesday, the Tigers’ first win ever over UWA in baseball.
“I really liked the way our offense battled back,” Stillman coach Donny Crawford said. “A lot of teams could’ve just thrown in the towel, but we didn’t.”

Chiefs cut Edwards, Huard, Surtain
- KANSAS CITY, Mo. | Three oft-injured veterans who hardly played last season were cut loose on Tuesday by the Kansas City Chiefs: linebacker Donnie Edwards, quarterback Damon Huard and cornerback Patrick Surtain.
The Chiefs announced on their Web site they terminated the contracts of the three, none of whom played much during the 2-14 season.

Hale County won three games of the tournament it hosted on Saturday.
In game one, it defeated Greensboro 14-1. Kaci Overton (1-0) got the win for Hale County, going six innings and striking out eight Greensboro batters.
Lara Fleenor had two doubles for Hale County in game one. Kacy Montgomery added a double.

Sparkman shot 56.9 percent on Wednesday and posted an 83-31 victory to knock the Lady Patriots out of the Class 6A Northwest Regional.
Jerome Elliott, who founded the Hillcrest girls program, said it was the worst defeat in school history.

Senior right-hander Dakota Patrick threw six winnings for the win, with eight hits, five strikeouts, two walks and two runs.

- TUSCALOOSA | A late goal by Jeremy Sheffield made the difference for Hillcrest Thursday in a 2-1 soccer victory over visiting Jess Lanier.
Sheffield's game-winning goal came on a caromed loose ball. Sheffield drove it into the back of the net with just 10 minutes remaining before stoppage-time.

Northridge sets baseball camp, alumni game
- Northridge High School will have a baseball camp and alumni game Saturday at the school’s baseball field.
The camp for kids will be from 8:30 a.m. until noon. That will be followed by Northridge’s first Alumni Game at 1 p,m. There are 18 former players who have committed to play in the game.

High schools to host baseball clinics Saturday
- Northridge High School will hold a hitting clinic Saturday at the high school field and the new indoor facility from 8:30 a.m. to noon for players in grades 1-6. Cost is $40. Participants can register at the field at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. Call 205-343-7319 for information.

Hillcrest leads lineup of prep girls sub-regionals

The Hillcrest High School girl’s basketball coach received word that senior guard Danielle Johnson had been selected as a Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year finalist. The winner will be announced March 12.

Paul W. Bryant beats Central, 5-0
- TUSCALOOSA | Ashley Lowe and Carolyn Howard scored two goals each in Paul W. Bryant's 5-0 soccer victory Tuesday over Central.
Jessica Wade scored the final goal for the Stampede.
Howard and Wade split at goalkeeper and combined to record the shutout.
Paul W. Bryant plays its second match of the season today against Sparkman in Huntsville.

Northridge beats Walker in soccer opener
- TUSCALOOSA | The Northridge High School boys team opened a new soccer season Tuesday with a 4-0 victory over Walker from Jasper.
Rafi Haque scored two goals for the Jaguars. Will Scogin and Joe Hollingsworth had one goal each.
Tom Guggenberger got the shutout in goal for Northridge.

Stillman Tigers debut at home today
- TUSCALOOSA | If weather permits, the Stillman College baseball team debuts at home today.
Even though rain is in the forecast, Stillman is scheduled to face Columbus (Ga.) State in a doubleheader starting at noon. Columbus State was ranked No. 5 in a national preseason poll.

Woods, a freshman from Aliceville, scored 10 of her season-high 11 points in the first half, and the Lady Bucs cruised to an 80-57 victory over Bevill State-Fayette.

Shelton State dominates rematch with Bears
- TUSCALOOSA | When the Bevill State Bears came to town to face Shelton State, the rematch turned into a knockout.
Led by sophomore guard Brandon Williams, Shelton State extended its winning streak to 23 with a 97-56 victory.
Williams, who made 8 of 12 3-poiners, poured in 28 points. The Buccaneers made 14 3-pointers in 34 attempts.
